Trade Under The Name You Actually Use

A registered trade name so the business your customers know matches the entity your bank does.

What A DBA Does And Does Not Do

A DBA registers a name your business operates under that differs from its legal name. It lets you invoice, bank, and advertise under that name.

It does not create an entity, does not provide liability protection, and does not by itself give you exclusive rights to the name. Those are separate questions with separate answers, and confusing them is common.

When You Need One

  • A sole proprietor operating under anything other than their own name
  • An LLC or corporation running a brand different from its legal name
  • A second line of business under one existing entity
  • A rebrand where the legal entity name is staying put
  • A bank requiring the registration before opening an account in that name

What The Registration Involves

The name is searched for conflicts, the trade name registration is prepared and filed with the state, and the confirmation is retained with the entity records. Where a county or municipal filing also applies, that is identified as part of the work.

Afterward the name has to be carried consistently: the bank account, the invoices, the license, and the accounting file should all agree. Inconsistency here is what causes payment and licensing problems months later.

Before You Call About DBA (Doing Business As) Registration

Is a DBA the same as a trademark?

No. A trade name registration lets you operate under the name. A trademark is a separate intellectual property matter with its own process and its own protections.

Can one LLC have several DBAs?

Generally yes, and each one is registered separately. Keeping the accounting separated by line of business is worth setting up at the same time.

Do I need a DBA if I already have an LLC?

Only if you operate under a name other than the LLC's legal name. If they match, the registration is unnecessary.
