Home/Tax Services/IRS & State Audit Support For Returns We Prepare
We Stand Behind The Returns We Prepare
If a return we prepared is selected for an IRS or state audit, you do not face it alone. We work through it with you and represent the work we did.
What This Service Covers
If Specialized Accounting prepared your tax return and that return is selected for an IRS or state audit, we can assist you through the audit process and represent the work we prepared. Audit representation is limited to returns prepared by Specialized Accounting. We do not provide general tax-resolution services or representation for returns prepared by other tax professionals.
- Correspondence audits asking about one or two items on a return we prepared
- Document requests on business expenses or mileage we reported
- Income matching notices on a return we filed
- Credit verification for education or dependent claims
- Alabama Department of Revenue reviews on state returns we prepared
How The Response Is Built
Most audits are narrow. A letter asks about a specific line on a specific return and requests documentation, and a well-documented response frequently ends it there. The notice is read closely, because what it asks for is narrower than what people usually send.
Records are assembled to match the request, gaps are identified honestly, and the response is written to address the question in front of it without opening subjects nobody asked about. Where the books behind the return need rebuilding to support what was filed, that work happens first.
Why The Scope Is Drawn Here
Every return prepared here is known line by line: the documents it came from, the questions asked at the time, and why each figure sits where it does. That is what makes it possible to stand behind the work when an examiner asks about it. A return prepared somewhere else carries decisions this office did not make, which is why representation stays with our own work.
Deadlines on audit notices are firm. The single most useful thing you can do is bring the letter the week it arrives rather than the week it expires.

Questions About Audit Support
What should I do first when a notice arrives?
Read the date and the response deadline, then get it in front of us. Do not send documents before understanding what was actually requested.
Can you help with a return I did not prepare?
Not with the audit itself. Audit representation is limited to returns prepared by Specialized Accounting. If an older return needs to be amended, or the years ahead need to be prepared correctly, that work is available.
What if I cannot find the receipts?
Then that gets addressed directly. Bank and card records, mileage patterns, and third-party statements can support many items, and where something genuinely cannot be supported, saying so early is better than defending it badly.
