Behind Is Fixable. Start Where You Are.
Books that fell behind, brought current and put in order, without a lecture about how it happened.
How Catch-Up Work Runs
Oldest period first, always. Bank and card statements are pulled, transactions are entered and categorized, and each account is reconciled before the next period opens. Working forward in order is what keeps a correction in one month from quietly breaking the next.
- Prior months and prior years entered and categorized
- Every period reconciled before the next one is opened
- Duplicate and missing transactions found and resolved
- Misposted entries reclassified rather than annotated
- Year-end balances tied to the last filed return
The Situations This Solves
Falling behind is ordinary. It happens during a growth year, after a staffing change, during an illness, or after the person who used to handle it moved on.
- Nothing has been categorized since a specific month
- Returns are unfiled because the books were never finished
- A prior accountant retired or passed away mid-engagement
- The software file was set up quickly and grew sideways
- A lender or the IRS is asking for records that do not exist yet
None of that changes the work. What matters is what exists now and which deadline is closest.
What It Takes To Begin
Bank statements, card statements, and read-only access to whatever software is already in use. If no software exists, a file is set up first. Missing pieces get flagged as we go rather than holding the whole engagement while one statement is located.
Catch-up is scheduled separately from ongoing bookkeeping, so getting current does not have to wait for a monthly engagement to begin. Many clients run both at once: the current month starts clean while the back years are rebuilt behind it.
Catch-Up Bookkeeping In Huntsville, AL And Across North Alabama
This is the second most common reason a business calls here, after monthly bookkeeping. Clients come from Huntsville, AL, Decatur, AL, Athens, AL, and the surrounding towns, and the whole engagement can run remotely through secure document exchange.
Common Questions On Catch-Up & Cleanup Bookkeeping
How far back can you go?
As far back as the records allow. Multiple years is normal. Which years actually need rebuilding depends on which returns are unfiled and what a lender or taxing authority has asked for.
What if some statements are missing?
Most banks can produce several years of statements on request, and we will tell you exactly which months are missing so you can request them. Gaps are flagged, not guessed at.
Will I be able to file my prior-year returns once this is done?
That is usually the point. Catch-up produces the finished books the unfiled returns need, and prior year unfiled returns can be prepared from them in the same engagement.
Is it too late if the IRS already sent a letter?
No. Bring the letter with its date. The deadline on it sets the order the work happens in, and when the letter is about a missing return, the books and that return are rebuilt together.

Missing years reconstructed from transcripts and records, prepared under each year's own rules, and filed oldest first so carryforwards land correctly.
