Unfiled Years Do Not Fix Themselves
Missing returns reconstructed and filed in order, so the account can finally be brought current.
How Missing Years Get Rebuilt
Old returns are filed oldest year first, because carryforwards, elections, and refund credits from one year feed the next. Filing the newest year first is how people end up filing twice.
- IRS wage and income transcripts pulled for each missing year
- Bank records and books used to rebuild business activity
- Each year prepared using that year's rules and forms
- Returns filed in sequence so carryforwards apply correctly
- Balances, interest, and penalties identified year by year
- A clear total for every year once the returns are done
Why It Is Worth Starting Now
When returns go unfiled long enough, the IRS may file a substitute return on your behalf. Those are built from reported income with no deductions, no expenses, and no filing status advantage, so the balance is almost always higher than the real one. Filing an accurate return replaces that assessment.
Refunds also expire. A refund from an unfiled year is generally lost after three years, which means waiting can turn money owed to you into money kept from you.
The Conversation That Starts It
You do not need to have the records in order before calling. Bring what exists and any letters you have received. Transcripts fill much of the rest, and the first step is establishing how many years are actually open and which one has the nearest deadline.
Nobody here is going to comment on how it happened. Illness, a business failure, a death in the family, and simple avoidance are all ordinary reasons, and none of them change the work.

What Clients Ask About Prior Year Unfiled Returns
How many years do I have to file?
It depends on your situation. Six years of filed returns is a common benchmark for bringing an account current, but the right answer comes from the transcripts and any notices you have received.
Will I go to jail for not filing?
Failure to file is usually resolved as a civil matter through returns, balances, penalties, and interest. What makes it worse is continuing not to file after the IRS has made contact.
Will I know what I owe before anything is filed?
Yes. Each year’s balance, with penalties and interest, is calculated and walked through with you before the returns are transmitted, so nothing arrives as a surprise.
Do I need my books done first?
For business years, usually yes. Catch-up bookkeeping and the returns are typically run as one engagement so the filings are built from reconciled records.
